Environmental Directives Timeline

With the focus on environmental issues continuing to increase, we are faced with increasing environmental regulation, much of which is derived from the European Union. The volume of environmental legislation that is now in existence can be a little overwhelming at times and with new legislation continuing to be published, it is important nowadays for all types of business to keep up-to-date with new developments.

The Environment Agency has established, through a partnership between the UK environmental regulators, NetRegs that provides free environmental guidance, including guidance on how to comply with the law, for small and medium-sized businesses throughout the UK.  The NetRegs website www.netregs.gov.uk gives a comprehensive account of all the current environmental legislation that may affect your business.

Directive on Batteries and Accumulators and Waste Batteries 2006/66/EC This is partially implemented in the UK by the Batteries and Accumulators (Placing on the Market) Regulations 2008 that came into force on 26 September 2008. Read more >>

Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (2002/91/EC) The Energy Performance of Buildings (Certificates and Inspections) Regulations 2007will implement key requirements of the directive in the UK and come into force in a phased manner from April 2007 to October 2008. Read more >>

Energy using Products (EuP) Directive 2005/32/EC This has been implemented in the UK as the Ecodesign for Energy Using Products Regulations 2007, which came into force in August 2007. Read more >>

EU Detergents Regulation (2004/648/EC) This regulation entered into force in Member States in October 2005 and sets out requirements for biodegradability testing and labelling of detergents. Read more >>

EU Regulation concerning the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) 2006/1907/EC This regulation applies to any individual or organisation involved in the manufacture, import, sale and use of chemical substances exceeding more than 1 tonne per year.
